StatementCSV
Convert a American Express statement PDF to CSV
StatementCSV reads the transaction lines in a American Express statement PDF in your browser and gives you a CSV with Date, Description, and Amount columns. The free preview shows how many transactions it found and the first 5 rows, so you can check your own PDF before you pay.
How the American Express label works
When the text of your PDF contains “American Express”, the app shows American Express next to the transaction count. If it doesn't find that text, it shows Generic. The label is only a label. Every statement goes through the same line parser, so the preview rows are what counts.
What gets picked up
- A text-based PDF downloaded from your American Express account, where you can select the words. Scanned or photographed statements have no text layer, so no rows are found.
- Text on the same line of the page is joined left to right. A line becomes a row when it starts with a date, like
01/04, 01/04/2026, or Jan 4, and ends with an amount with cents, like 42.10, $1,042.10, -42.10, or (42.10).
- The text between the date and the amount becomes the description. Lines that don't match, like summaries and notices, are skipped.
Things to check
- Signs. A minus sign, a trailing minus, or parentheses become a negative amount. Otherwise the amount stays positive, as printed.
- Two dates. If a line prints two dates, the first goes in the Date column and the second stays at the start of the description.
- Year. Dates are kept as printed. If the statement shows
01/04 without a year, the CSV does too.
- Totals. Compare the rows with the totals on your PDF before you rely on the file.
What's in the CSV
A header row of Date,Description,Amount, then one row per transaction, with each value in double quotes. There's no balance, category, or account column.
